Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication that is commonly used to treat conditions related to excessive stomach acid production. It is chemically described as 2-(((3-Methyl-4-(2, 2, 2-trifluoroethoxy) pyridin-2-yl) methyl) sulfinyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole, molecular formula and molecular weight is C16H14F3N3O2S & 369.4g/mol.

It is approved by the United States, most commonly prescribed medication with more than 2 million prescriptions. It is available as a generic medication. Lansoprazole sold under Prevacid. In order to work, it reduces the amount of acid that is produced in the stomach. It is also prescribed for the treatment of duodenal ulcers.

It can be used to manage conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (Stomach produces too much acid).


Mechanisms:-

It inhibits the proton pump in stomach lining. In order for stomach acid to be produced, proton pumps must be activated, By inhibiting the pump, lansoprazole decreases the production of acid, leading to a reduction in stomach acidity. Common side effects includes Headache, Nausea & Abdominal pain.
