Acitretin is chemically described as 9-(4-Methoxy-2,3,6-trimethylphenyl)-3,7-dimethylnona-2,4,6,8-tetraenoic Acid.

It's molecular formula and molecular weight is C21H26O3 & 326.44 g/mol respectively.

Acitretin is approved by FDA for psoriasis and effective as monotherapy. It's the only systemic Retinoid.

It is sold under the brand name Neotigason. It is a second-generation retinoid. It is used for psoriasis.

It is used in the treatment of psoriasis a chronic skin condition characterized by red, scalpy patches on the skin. It is a synthetic retinoid, which means it is derived from vitamin A. Acitretin works by targeting the abnormal skin growth associated with psoriasis.

Mechanism of Action:-

Acitretin regulates the growth and development of skin cells by affecting their differentiation and proliferation.

It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which contribute to its effectiveness in treating psoriasis.

Acitretin is often used when other treatments, such as topical creams, phototherapy, or systemic medications, have not provided sufficient relief for individuals with severe or recalcitrant psoriasis.

Acitretin can also be used as maintenance therapy for individuals who have achieved improvement with the medication.

In some cases, acitretin may be prescribed in combination with other psoriasis treatments, such as phototherapy (light therapy) or biologic medications, to enhance the therapeutic effect and improve overall outcomes.
