CAS No. 1405-87-4
Bacitracin is approved by The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1948. It's molecular formula is C66H103N17O16S and molecular weight is 1422.69 g/mol.
Bacitracin is chemically described as 4-[[2-[[2-(1-Amino-2-methylbutyl)-4,5-dihydro-1,3-thiazole -4-carbonyl]amino]-4-methyl pentanoyl] amino]-5-[[1-[4-[20-(2-amino-2-oxoethyl) -5-(3-aminopropyl)-11-benzyl-8-butan-2-yl-17-(carboxymethyl) -14-(1H-imidazol-5-ylmethyl) -3,6,9,12,15,18,21-heptaoxo-1,4,7,10,13, 16,19-heptaza cyclohenicos-2-yl]butyl amino]-3-methyl-1-oxo pentan-2-yl] amino]-5-oxo pentanoic acid.
Bacitracin is an ‘antiobiotic ointment’ used in both medical professional and general public to treat bacterial infections.
Bacitracin is used to treat minor burns, cuts, or scrapes. It is used as single ointment or in combination with triple therapy of ointment which is neomycin and polymyxin B.
It is used as acute and chronic skin infections. In addition to this, bacitracin is also used to prevent wound infections, treat pneumonia and empyema (Pus) in infants as well eye infections.
Bacitracin is a “polypeptide antibiotic” belongs to the class of medications called antibiotics. Bacitracin terminates the growth of bacteria. It is available in generic stores in the form of "ointment”.
Mechanisms:-
Bacitracin is mixture of cyclic polypeptide antibiotics that has bactericidal and bacteriostatic properties.
Bacitracin binds with C55-isoprenyl pyrophosphate, which disturbs the cell wall synthesis by retarding dephosphorylation of lipid carrier.
Common side effects allergic reactions, skin irritation, itching, and rashes.
